Our school

Welcome back!

After a week of lessons, we are back on the track. Although we still have some restrictions (having to wear our face masks, using desinfectant and so on) we have again started a new year in our school. Looking for a big celebration, too, as our school will turn 60 years old this year.

3rd ESO students have written short descriptive texts around three topics: rules, subjects and homework and the timetable we have to follo. We hope you like the texts we have selected for you.

Description of pictures

Alghough these days have changed a little bit our routines, we have come back to write, learn, listen and read. Today, we are posting some texts written by 3rd ESO students where they describe pictures. Here, people are doing different things, so they have mainly used present continuous. They have also used expressions such as "at the bottom", "on the right" or "in the background".

Population pyramids

Our country's population has changed a lot during the last 100 years, so we have decided to look for information and understand why those changes have taken place.

We have chosen a pyramid from the beginning of the 20th century, another one from mid century and the most recent one (2017-2019 approx).

This task is included in a series of activities related to CLIL. CLIL stands for Content and Language Integrated Learning and refers to teaching subjects such as science, history and geography to students through a foreign language.

Projects

Being an enterpreneur is not easy. Some of our 3rd ESO students have learnt about starting up your own business and have developed their ideas for a new product or service.

First of all, they wrote some notes about their ideas, their own personalities, and finally developed some presentations about what they wanted to do. Later on, they had to look for the budget, financial resources and viability of their own projects. We will show this productions in another post. In this post you will see most of the ideas which, who knows, may be developed in the future.

Writing an informal email
Hi Sophie!,

How are you? I know I haven’t written you for ages, but I have an explanation: this holidays I’ve been away (I went skiing) and I didn’t have network connection so that’s why I couldn’t write you.
It was great to hear that you are coming to Barcelona in two weeks, can’t wait to see you! It’s been a while since we last saw eachother this summer.
You’re are coming to Barcelona with that exchange you told me, right? To improve your Spanish speaking and to visit the city. As you probably know, in Catalonia we talk Catalan but everyone knows Spanish so don’t worry, you’ll be able to talk perfectly in Spanish. But I’ll teach you some easy common expressions in Catalan as ‘Adéu’ or ‘Gràcies’ that mean ‘Goodbye’ and ‘thank you’ (I’ll show you the pronunciation personally when you come here because it’s very difficult to write it in an email) then you’ll be able to talk a bit with local people.
About the local accent you told me, I don’t notice any local accent because I live here but you might notice it.
It’s important to remember, when you come here, some typical gestures we daily do; for example: when we met a new person we kiss that person in each cheek once (I don’t know if you do that in Switzerland). About our local behaviour… here people don’t respect queues too much or the traffic lights, etc.

Anyway, you’ll have a lot of fun here and I hope that you won’t have to do many classes here so then we’ll be able to spend more time together. Text me when you arrive and have a safe flight, see you in two weeks!
Hugs and kisses,

Ariadna.

Enterpreneurship

Some of our students are doing a optional subject in English this term. It is called Enterpreneurship and it provides basic vocabulary and strategies about Economics and how to set up your own business. We will show you some of the ideas our students have made up. Obviously, some of them are too difficult to carry out, but some others are really realistic and good. Coming soon...

A blog post

You may think this is a weird post, because... it is. 3rd ESO students have created blog entries as if they were posting them. Some of them have chosen more traditional formats, as word documents, while others have chosen different digital tools on line. The posts are about some of their favourite activities. A wide range of texts. Enjoy!

Informal emails

Nowadays, not many people write informal letters anymore because we tend to write an email instead of that older way of communication.

3rd ESO students have written short informal emails as a way of practising this writing task. Here we are showing you a small part of those emails. They were asked to write to a friend, planning a visit in their home town and giving some news, too.

A happy ending

Traveling is great. It doesn't matter if you drive, fly or just walk. Having some free time and discovering a new culture is always a fantastic experience. For a few days or weeks you may feel adventurous and will be able to experience how other people in other areas live.
Not everything always goes as planned, though. That's why we have written some short stories which seemed to be a complete disaster but that finally had a happy ending. Enjoy!

Our School

We spend six hours a day at school. Because of that, 3rd ESO students have written short descriptions about what our school looks like, following a given structures. Some of them have also described one extra-curricular activity they like doing.

Opinion essays. Discussion.

It's difficult to write a short essay and to express our opinion on a particular topic. In this case, 3rd ESO students have decided between the necessity of having a mobile phone or if it is better to send an e-mail than to write a traditional letter. Some of the pieces of work they have produced are shown here. Remember it's always necessary to use right linking words, like the ones shown at the top of this post.
